Animatic

We have put together a animatic on Imovie on my mac where individual pictures were taken of each of the shots and then put into imovie and then set for the amount of seconds which we planned it to be in our storyboard and this has helped us to get an idea of what the video is going to look like and to see if we have enough shots and to see if they are long enough/ short enough. This won't be guaranteed to be exactly what our video is going to look like but it is going to be an idea of what we are going to do and if some shots don't work then we will try other ideas to try and make the video as good as we can.

Storyboard

First Storyboard Mock up

We created a storyboard of ideas from our Prezzi but after this first page we realised that we needed to add in more shots as when we did the Busted video we had 37 shots just for a minute. We also found out that we needed to cut down our song from about 5 mintues to 3 and a half minutes. We decided to cut it from the first 18 seconds and finish it at 3 mintues 52 because it meant that it finished on a bit where it was intrumental.

Risk Assesment

There will need to be a risk assesment done for the video to make sure that there isn't any accidents and to make sure that there are a list of risks that we can hopefully avoid throughout the making of the video. This will be done by writing a risk assesment to try and prevent the risks happening it will help us so we know what may happen in advance and see ways of tackling the risks. It will mean that the people on set are away from harm and make sure that no one gets hurt and to make sure things run smoothly.

Risk: Car accidents
This would be highly unlikley to happen but we will need to make sure that the people in the car are wearing seatbelts and we will need to make sure that the person driving the car drives carefully. If this was to happen it would be a severe risk so we will make sure the driver drives slowley to prevent this from happening. The people at risk from this would be the people in the car, so the driver and the actor and the cast and crew.

Risk: Tripping over the set
This would be quite a likely event to occur so we will need to make sure that there is nothing to trip over when recording and we will need to make sure that bags are out of the way and we will need to make sure that we set the tripod up in a safe place so no body trips over it. This could be prevented by telling the actors and the crew of possible props and equipment which could be a hazzard to them so they won't trip over. The equipment is at risk because if someone trips over the tripod then the camera may get damaged. Can trip over camera wires so will need to be careful and make sure no equipment gets brocken. The actors and crew are at risk because it may mean that they get injured. We will need to make sure the area is clear of equipment.

Risk: Dropping the equipment
This is quite a likley risk so I would say that it is highly likely that it may happen accidently that something may drop e.g. The camera or the guitar, it is quite severe if this happens because it may mean that the camera breaks which would mean that we will need to find a different one and it may also mean that if the guitar breaks we may have already done some shots with one guitar and this will mean the guitars will be different in the music video which would make it unporffesional. The people at risk from things falling are the actors and the crew as it may fall on them and cause injury.

Risk: People colliding
We will need to make sure that people keep an eye out for others to make sure no one bumps into eachother. This isn't very severe but is quite likely of happening. We will need to make sure that everyone moves around safe and makes sure that they aren't carrying any objects which could hit into anyone.

Risk: Pulling a muscle or straining back when moving props
We will need to make sure that we are very careful when moving the props around and will need to make sure that the objects are carried one at a time and if some props are heavy we will need to get more than one person to help with it. I don't think that this will happen if we take one prop at a time.

Risk: Eyestrain and headaches
Editing on the computer for a long period of time may cause eye strain and headaches so we will need to ensure that we have breaks in between when editing the video on the macs.

Risk: Getting hit by a car
We will need to ensure that we are very safe when filming near roads and will need to make sure that we stay on the pavements when filming and also will need to make sure that we are sensible on the pavement and make sure nothing can fall onto the road.

Star Image

Star Image
We will need to use star image throughout our video and this will be done throughout our video to appeal to the audience and attract them. Star image is a vital component of the artists process. You can identify the stars meta narrative through their videos, the record label manipulates and changes the artist's image with each video release to increase sales, consolidate target markets and broaden appeal to new audiences. This shows that star image is very important to gain a big audience.

Emotional Affinity
The star image helps the artist to connect to the audience and this also helps the artist to look good and also to fit in with the genre. using the star image it will help the audience to identify the artist with star quality and hopefully the genre. The image of the artist will help present Skye the way we want her to be portrayed. By feeling loose attachment with Skye it will make them feel as if they can relate to her and it will make them feel the need to buy her albums and go to her tours and concerts.

Self Identification
The star image is done to create a connection from the artist to the audience, so we need to be sure that Skye has a star image to connect with the audience. The fact that Skye is quite young and in fact modern it means that he will fit in with the artists of today as they are all quite young and very attractive which Skye is, so she will fit in with the star image. Skye's age group will be around the teens and 20's because of her age and her style although the music may appeal to an older audeince. Having Skye as the same age of the audience helps make her appeal to the audience because they will see her as an icon. The fact that she will be the same age as the audience I think that it will make an istant connection because they can relate to her. I think that the genre of Skye will make it also easy to connect with the audience and amking sure that the clothing is suitable for the genre because then people will feel that they can connect as they like the same things that Skye likes. I think that Skye will connect to the audience through how she is portrayed through the video and how she acts in the video. It allows the audience to put themselves in the same situation which helps them connect with the star.

Imitation
This is where the artist acts as a role model, the clothing and style will be a big part of the icon identity. The clothing style that we want Skye to be in is quite subtle clothing so it fits in with the genre and making sure she has the folk/soft rock look so it fits in with the genre and so the target market will associate her look with the genre. For soft rock clothing it is quite simple outfits with a bit of rock introduced to it e.g. Leather jacket. The style and the attitude creates the stars to be idolised and make people want to be like them. The style of Skye I think is really important throughout the video because in all music videos I feel that they all wear nice clothing and this makes you want to see what they are wearing and also makes you wonder what they will be wearing next. It also makes you see them as an icon and the clothing of what she wears will help us to show how we want Skye to be portrayed to the audience. We also want her makeup to be quite natural and plain in order to fit in with the genre. I think that Skye will be seen as an Icon as she will be in nice clothing and will have nice hair and makeup which will aspire people to be like her and therefore she will be seen as an icon. I think that it is important that the styling is right because stars with good style tend to be seen as icons e.g. Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Jessie J. Most of these artists have abstract styling and makeup which makes them be seen as icons.

Projection
This is where people start imitating the artist and copying exactly what there doing e.g. copying there hair and clothing etc. I don't think that as Skye gets bigger people will copy her clothing and hair etc. but for now I think people may just like her style but not copy it as she isn't a big enough star yet which assumes that within more bigger stars projection happens. An example of this would be the Britney spears look a like which copies everything Britney Spears does, even when she went bald!

I have looked at Richard Griffith and Richard Dyers theories to help me with thinking about star image as they are very similar and this has helped me to look at the theories and to think about what needs to be added into our video and how Skye needs to be presented to fit in with the Star image by adding in attitude and elements of idolising her will help with how she is presented to her audience.

Annotating the lyrics

As we want our video to be a illustration video I thought that annotating the lyrics would be good so we could get ideas from the words. I think that from the lyrics 'Fast Car' it would be a very good idea to have elements of a car involved throughout the video in order to have it relate to the lyrics. I think that because we want it to be an illustration video we need the car to be involved in the video. I thought of several ways in which we could incorporate the car. I firstly thought looking into the motorway because it could focus on the lights as it says 'city lights' I also thought that we could have an in car shot because I thought that it would look good as we could see what Skye would see. I also thought of the idea of using Skye singing in the street because it says 'Started from zero' which shows that she had nothing, so having her singing on the street as if she was a performer would make it link in with the lyrics. I thought of speeding up some of the in car bits when the lyrics say 'fast enough' because at this point the tempo of the song also becomes faster which makes it fit in better with the shots and the look.

Representations in our Music Video

The main representation for our video will be the lyrics as we are doing an illustration video. For our video we are going to be doing a Illustration video which is where the lyrics match up with the visuals, which fits in with Andrew Goodwins theory. I think that using Illustration for our video will work really well because I think that the use of the lyrics 'Fast Car' means that we can use a lot of shots of cars in our video. We won't be using illustration for the whole of our video because in some parts we will be using lip syncing which also fits in with Andrew Goodwins theory. We will try and stick to the theory throughout the making of the video. The story of the video is about Skye and it's her everyday life being shown through the video and it's just all of her thoughts and feeling coming out through the song. It starts of in a small room where we have Skye lip syncing on a chair and then throughout the video it cuts to various locations depending on the lyrics. We have various shots of Skye walking on the road and various shots of the motorway. We also have shots in Leicester Town as in a part of the song it says 'in to the city' so we are going to take some shots in town. As our video is an illustration we are going to annotate the lyrics which will help us to see what parts we can put where throughout the video and this will help us to narrow down our locations and help us to look at locations that we can use for our final piece. Another representation is the artist, Skye will be portrayed as quite an average teenage girl but will star quality. She will also be portrayed as quite simple but also with a little bit of attitude. Skye will be seen in the male gaze throughout the video which fits in with Andrew Goodwins theory but this will be done subtly rather than obviously.

Applying Theories To Our Music Video

For the video we will be applying the theories that we have looked at to our video. In todays music videos there is a lot of focus on the artist in the videos and there style and relating it to the genre. There needs to be iconography present and this will be done by making sure that our artist is stereotyped as a Folk/ Soft rock genre in order to come across well to the audience. I will also be making sure that the male gaze is present as in todays music videos you rarely see a female who isn't attractive, so we will be making sure that Skye looks appealing and has the male gaze to ensure it fits in with the male gaze theory. The male gaze theory is where a person is used for a visual effect and because they are appealing to the eye. You see male gaze in a lot of the media for example on the music channels almost everyone is    represented in either the male or female gaze showing that this theory is done vastly in the media. It is also used on the television and on the internet and in magazines. Examples of artists which use the male gaze are Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Cheryl cole, Nicole Sherzinger and artists which use the female gaze are Kanye West, Chris Brown and Jay Sean. The 'gaze' theory is done to grab the viewers attention so therefore we will be using the male gaze throughout or music video to grab the viewers attention. An example of a music video which uses the male gaze is Nicki Minaj's video 'Superbass' where it focuses on her main assets and her dance moves which are of a sexual manner which makes the male audience want to view the video. However our video isn't one where we are going to be subjecting sexual actions but we will be subjecting the artist herself. Although it will have the male gaze by making sure Skye looks presentable we wont be focusing on assets such as the bum etc. We will be focusing more on the movement and her relation to the genre and her style rather than her body which I think will make the video more classy and fit in much better with the genre.

Cutting the song down

Our song was originally 4:58 so we intended to cut it down. We also thought that starting it a little later would work well because the instrumental at the start was really long. We cut the instumental and instead we have started the song at 0.18 seconds instead of 0.00 because it works better. We originally thought we should finish the song at 3:52 but we realised that would be too long so we changed the timing so it now finishes at 3:25 so now the song is cut down from 4 minutes 58 seconds to 3 minutes 7 seconds which means that there will be less shots.

Researching camera angles

Adele - Rolling in the deep

I think that the side on of the artists face works really well in this and I think that it would work well to do a side on shot like this of Skye as Andrew Goodwin suggests that close ups of the artist look good in videos. I think that the side angel works really well as it makes a different from other straight up mid shots and creates a different feel.

Andrew Goodwin suggests that there is a need for close ups so I have looked at this image and I think that this shot would work well in our video. I think that the angle works well because it isn't front on but a little to the side. The close up makes it easier to see the artist and it uses the male gaze.

I really like the angle of this because it is straight on but the chair is turned to a slight angle which I think works really well and makes the artist stand out a lot more which I think makes the whole shot more effective. I think that it helps to focus a lot on the mise en scene as it is a long shot so I think that long shots are very important when looking at the mise en scene.

Jar of hearts

I really like the angle of this shot on the stairs because you can see the side of the stairs and you can see the artist from side on which I think works really well. Andrew Goodwins theory about the male gaze works well here. I think that having the artist in the foreground and the stairs in the background works really well.

I really like the shot of her shoes because I think that it focuses well at this point as you have the car in the foreground which I think works really well. I really like how it doesn't show her face as it build up suspicion as you don't know whats going to happen and also build up suspense. I think that having the care it works well as it focuses on the shoes and you can tell that it is a focus coming up.
I also like the shot of her walking behind the car as you can again see it in the foreground which I think works really well and it makes it a big focus and seeing as our song is called 'Fast Car' I think that it is a good idea to use a car in this way.

Billionaire

I really like how the person is in the foreground ad the car is in the background. I really like that its to a slight angle because I think that it looks better and it means you can see more of the car and the person rather than a straight shot.

I really like how there is a shot of him walking as we want Skye to be walking past a road and I think that this shot and angle works really well because you can see all of the surroundings as it is a long shot.

I really like how you can see the car moving from this angle but I know we wouldn't be able to do this so hopefully we can use a camera inside and get a view of the surroundings.

Taylor Swift - Fifteen

I think that the side close up works really well as it makes a change from the front up close ups throughout the video. It takes into account some of the background which I think works really well.

I clipped out the lips on the shot because I really like how there is a close up of the lips on this shot because I think that it works really well because it makes you focus on the lyrics. I think this would be a good shot to have in our music video as I think that it will work really well throughout the video if it is used only a few times as it will focus on certain words.

This shot is a really good shot that we would really like to achieve because we like how the angle is just straight on in a field and I like how there is a tree and how the guitar is a focus. I think that this straight on angle works well for viewing the whole picture and I think that the long shot works really well because you can see all of the landscape and the background. I think that this could look very effective and it makes the guitar a focus and helps the music show through the imagery. It has been done in various other videos with guitars and I think that it works really well as it makes the guitar and the music stand out.

I really like this angle because it isn't a straight on close up of the artist there is various parts of the background involved in the shot which I think works really well. I think that it works really well having most of the face in the shot but not all of the face because it makes it more unusual and it brings focus to her facial features with the use of a close up.

I think that the close up of her legs works really well because it focuses of the flowers in the foreground and instead of having bare feet it would be good to focus on the shoes that Skye is wearing. I think that it works really well having the camera at the feet because it takes eyes of the male gaze and keeps your attention on the foreground and the mise en scene.

Facebook Page

We have created a Facebook page for our fictional artist so it will help with our audience feedback and also we can get opinions from our peers and see if they like our ideas. Lots of artists are on facebook and it helps with marketing them.

Photoshoot Schedule

Where: White background and white floor, green screen if we can find one, but it may be hard to locate a green screen as they are very expensive so using a white background and floor would be easier. We may use some exterior shots to be done in a park or factory. We could also do another photoshoot or at least in some of the photos use instruments and also at the places where we film the video as it will make them link together well.

Who: We need to use Skye for the images so we can take pictures of her, we also need to think about her style and clothing to get the image across of how we wantg her to be seen by the audiance. We will also need to We need to think about the clothing that she will be in and make sure it fits in with the clothing in the video so we may use the same clothing but more likely use more glamorous clothing which will make it more like an artists photoshoot. We will also make sure she is wearing natural makeup which will fit in with the genre well.

What: We need to get a camera and then a USB cable and then we also need a computer/ laptop that we can put the photos onto and also photoshop so that we can edit the photos. We will also need any props that we are thinking of using, for example a guitar or a piano.

Below is some photography of the sort of imagery I like and the sort of things which could work well within our genre including the setting and props etc. I really like the use of photography on the road where you can see the cars in the background because I think it works really well for our song as it is about a car which means it will work well for the title. I also like the look of the photography on the stairs because I think that it makes it look natural and it makes the mise en scene look really good and the colours are quite dull which makes the artist stand out from the background. I think that the plain background works really well because it makes the photography look really professional so I think that a mix of a plain background and a background with exterior shots would work really well. I also definitely think that we should use the instruments in some of the photography as I think that it would work really well and would fit in with Andrew Goodwins theory well by linking the music to the visuals. I like the setting in a field as I think it brings the countryside into the photography and it makes it seem more natural which is how we want skye to be portayed. I also like photos where the artist is photographed 3 times and where they are put next to eachother as I think that this works really well.

Ideas for Storyboard

We did a mindmap on Prezzi because we needed to get our ideas narrowed down and so we could get an idea of what we could put in our storyboard. We used Prezzi to do the mindmap and we did ideas for the exterior and interior shots. We also did ideas for the editing parts where we thought of the idea of having 'Skye' sitting in one place, then moving her to another without moving the camera so it looks like she is moving as we thought this would look really effective and it would mean that we had an abstract part to our video. We also thought that we shouldn't use black and white throughout the whole thing but we thought maybe at the park would look quite good because at the forest it would be in colour so there would be a contrast between the two which would make the mise en scene look really good. We also really love the idea of having a car in the video so from the inside we think it would be good to place the camera on the window and drive and add it into our video. We made sure that we stuck to Andrew Goodwins theory in this mindmap because we want to keep his theory in mind when making the video because we think that it will make our video much better and it will make it look like a proffesional music video.

Pitch Feedback

"we really like your idea and love the song choice! your choice of colour scheme we think will work really well and will tie in with your genre perfectly :)maybe you should've included images of what you wanted your artist to look like and some possible locations shots! "

This was our first comment from a class mate, we found it helpful because now we are reassured that the colour scheme will be popular and a positive aspect of the music video. We are however going to include a post of our blog filled with photographic images of our artist Skye so we can also test out the image such as the outfits and fashion style. Overall we have studied possible locations however we still need to take shots of real life locations that we will use.
Our teacher added to the feedback and commented on his likability of the name as it is original and different. This has reassured us that the name works well with not only the genre but also the song. After answering questions we were able to think more about the depth of the finalising the video, such as location and mise-en-scene.

''We like the location ideas you have, as there is a good variety, but we think you could maybe use the slow movement idea just in important aspects of your video :)''

This was our 2nd comment and it made us think about the slow movement and thinking about whether to put faster movement in the video rather than keep on doing slow movement as it may make the video a little boring and therefore it may make the video more exciting and make it look better. It has also given us the idea to use slow movement just in the important parts of the video rather than for the whole video as it means that there will be more movement.

We were asked after showing our pitch if we knew where we were going to shoot our video, the answer was that we do have some ideas. We know that we want some inside and some outside. This comment helped us because we now know that we need to start thinking about this in more detail and post some ideas onto our blog so that it is clear for people to see. We also got asked if we knew who we were going to use for our music. We did but again we now know that we need to make this more obvious and maybe get her more involved in posts on our blog, including photos.

25 Word Pitch

25 Word Pitch

Instruments

The video is very much a instrumental song and including a instrument will be relevant and realte to the lyrics and structure. Another possibility for a instrumental prop could be a piano. The guitar will be the main instrument however it may vary betweent he two and in the scenes for a varity of movement. We will provide the instruments ourselves, however i think we may struggle abit with the piano, we could possibly borrow off of our school to overcomethis problem. With the instruments the artist will look like she is genuinally using and singing the song more rather than miming.

For the video we will need to use the instruments which are in the song to make the video more authentic and to make it realistic. We will be using a guitar as it is the main instrument in the music. We are going to get the guitar ourselves as some of us own guitars and this will make it easier than borrowing it from school as we can use it whenever we want. We have decided to use the idea of the instruments to make it more of a visual aspect and because it will match with the music and the visuals, also I think it will make it look much better. Having the guitar idea we will need to make sure that 'Skye' is able to play the guitar so it looks genuine and so it fits to the music. I think that the guitar is the main focus of the song as in Tracy Chapmans video she is singing with her guitar throughout the whole thing, so I think that it needs to have a guitar in some of the video but I don't think that we need it for the whole thing because then I think that it won't work as well and therefore may make it too modernised and won't relate to the genre as well and the music won't match up to the visuals as well. We are going to see our artist playing the guitar in parts of our video, we like the effect of this and think it will lookgood with our style of music. We are hoping to do this in parts of the music video that are instrumental as well as not. An advantage of using our person as Skye is that she is learning to play the guitar and therefore this will hopefully look realistic and work well in our music video.

Location Possibilities

For the exterior I have looked at possible locations that we could use.

Forest
I thought about the use of a forest because I thought that it looked quite good with the tone of music we have gone for. Also as the music at the start sounds a bit like it's in the country it may be a good idea. I think that the use of the forest would be a good choice as it looks nice visually. I thought that this would look really good because I think we could have Skye in the middle of the trees and it would look very simple and we could have it in black and white and then have Skye in a colour which would make it stand out from the background.

Town
I also thought of the idea of using town because it would be an easy place for all of us to get to. I think that town has a lot of good places where we could film and also it means that it is a natural setting so we wouldn't have to set up the scene etc. I think that we could have Skye walking through the town when she is singing the lyrics and I also think it would be good to record some other shots in town without Skye as it make mean we have a variety of shots in stead of just Skye throughout the whole video. We thought that having the setting in town it would make it very realistic and would also make it have a good setting which wouldn't take long to set up. There is also a fountain in town which we think would be a very good location because it would make the visuals fit in with the genre and the slow music which will make it seem calm like the song. I think that having this in black and white would look good because it would make the water out of the fountain stand out.

Road
I also think that if the artist is sitting near the road we could film the cars as she is talking about a 'fast car' which might mean that it will work well as it will relate to the lyrics. I think that sitting by a road would work well if she is walking past it as she could be looking into the cars then we could go to a scene where there is someone in the car who she is singing about which may work well. I think that having it in the dark so all of the lights stand out would make it look really good because it means that the bright lights would be a focus and also speeding it up would work well because she is singing about a fast car so it would mean that it would fit in with the lyrics and therefore it would work well as Andrew Goodwins theory suggests.

I have looked at a variety of different outside shots where I think would be suitable for the video. I had the idea of using a park because I like the miss en scene in the park as I think the visuals work well and also I like the trees and swings in the background as I think it looks good. I also looked at roads as I think that this may work well because it will relate to the song as 'Skye' will be looking at the cars which will work really well I think. I also like the idea of using steps because I think that we could have 'Skye' on one step then another shot on another step because I think that this may work really well. I think that this has helped me to look at locations which fit in with the genre and which link into Andrew Goodwins  theory for example the use of looking at cars because I think that videos which relate to the lyrics look much better than those that don't.

The possibilities for the interiors are:

Concert
I think that the use of a concert or performance would work really well because I think it works really well as we have seen in previous music videos, e.g. Adele and Tracy Chapmen. I really like the realisticness of it and how the mise en scene looks, however it may be hard to get all the people in the background and make it look realistic which may mean that it won't look good. I think that a concert would make it fit in with the genre and how Skye is portrayed to the audience.

Studio
I think that the use of a studio works really well because of that fact that it looks like they are making there music and it is natural. It may be hard to find a studio but if we do it would look really good if we had 'Skye' singing in to the microphone as I think it would work really well. I think this may not work to well as it may look a bit like an R&B genre but if done right it may look good, also done in black and white it would look really good.

Warehouse
I like the use of a warehouse as it looks very messy and dirty and so effortless but it looks really simple and I think it somewhere where we could film. I think that it would work really well and I also think that it makes the mise en scene in the genre work really well. I came up with the idea of a warehouse because I thought that it looked like the room in Adeles video which I thought worked really well and I thought would be a good mise en scene for our genre and music video.

Car

I really like the idea of filming in a car because I think that it works really well with the lyrics because of the fact that she's talking about a 'fast car' and seeing as it is a fast car I think it would be a good idea to edit the footage and speed it up so that it links into the song. I think that the mise en scene from the window of a car work really well because there is so much going on and if in the dark all the lights would be on which would work well.

I have looked at a range of interior locations that I think may be good for our video and for this I looked at places which I though worked well in other videos which I looked at through my research. I thought of the idea of using the studio because I think it will look good because it will look like she's making the song and it will relate to the visuals. I also think the studio would look good because it would show how the music gets made which looks good in a video. I also thought of the idea of looking at performance places as I think it would look good if we did it like a performance as that is what Tracy Chapman has in her video. I thought about a small performance rather than a big performance because I think that it would be easier to do as we have better equipment for it, so maybe in a pub or somewhere small.
